Hats to turn heads this summer 2011
Whether for spring rain or summer sun, this season’s new designs in hats are definitely turning heads.
The fedora is seeing a revival in new materials with feather trims or ornate bands to give a more contemporary feel from Eugenia Kim or giving a big nod to its timeless classic design from Steven Alan in women’s fashion or more playful in men’s designer fashions from Ignite and Coal. The fedora’s country cousin of the Stetson takes time off the range for some festival chic woven with beaded or flowered adornments from Melissa Odabash and Yogo Ego, while heading back to the jungle is the suede sophistication of the safari hat from Etro.
Oversized sun hats bring back the fun of a seaside summer in straw from the authentic modes of Babajaan, bold one colour from Warehouse and with audacious black swirl or stripe patterns from Prada and the New York Hat Company, animal prints from Seeberger or side bow and pin embellishments from Lanvin. Crotchet-knits are back on bucket and sunhats, and work perfectly with Missoni‘s vibrant zig zag patterns and colour combos while cloche hats express their ever-elegant lines with more subtle hues and chic bows from River Island.
For men, beanies still compliment current trends with slouch styles from All Saints and Soul Cal or peaked modes from Voi and Firetrap, as do flat caps or bucket hats from Fred Perry, Diesel and Penfield. However, it is the bastion of men’s fashion in hats, the trilby, which has received a mischievous amount of attention from designers this season. Men’s trilbies are available in a range of striking cloth modes from Reiss and Ted Baker or in straw with vibrant patterned bands from Paul Smith, Soviet and Jack & Jones. Trilbies for women come with floral or lively prints from Oasis or Borsalino and across bands from Miss Selfridge or lace top coverings from Dolce & Gabbana, with two tone weaves from French Connection and Jigsaw or high colour from Catarzi and Goorin. Meanwhile, the trilby’s close relatives of the panama and the boater hat are seeing new fun designs from Pachacuti and Hartford or the mini boater from Asos.
Although technically a part of the Autumn/Winter 2011/2012 collection and while the summer might not be the most obvious fur fashion months; it would be remiss to overlook the hat set to be a style favourite over the course of the next year, with Burberry’s full peaked fur caps in bold black and white for women and in high sheen black for men. These animal inspired print caps are available now and present a classy finish for both day and evening wear coupled with a seriously luxury feel to lovingly embrace your head. For more head warming options to beat a chill summer breeze, fur is also dressing up the Cossack in faux by Pieces and lining hoods on jackets and gilets in fox from the likes of bold hue fan Helen Yarmak.
Other popular hats for both men and women this summer falls into the baseball/army cap range, which is fast becoming a retro favourite. Mixed up with a distressed or patchwork appearance from True Religion, Polo by Ralph Lauren and G-Star or juiced in high colour from the likes of Pendleton, New Era and in line with the summer season trend of colour blocking from Franklin & Marshall.
